Project of the Month Classes

Project of the Month classes are designed to help you get started on a specific project. The class will be 1 to 2 sessions, depending on the complexity of the pattern.  A sample of the pattern will be available so you have a chance to see a finished project.

May 2019:  My First Sweater

Dates (two sessions):
Tuesdays, May 14 & 21, 7-9pm
Class Price: $62
Prerequisites: Must be able to cast on, knit, purl, bind off.
Description:
Ready to go beyond scarves & hats? Take the terror out of sweater-making with this sleeveless teddy-size shell. You will learn about garment types (drop-shoulder, inset, and set-in sleeve sweaters, cardigans, etc) and ways in which they can be constructed (top-down, bottom-up, in seamed pieces or seamlessly). You’ll learn how to read pattern instructions that translate the inches of a garment into the stitches and rows of knitting. And you’ll apply what you have learned by knitting up and seaming together the pieces of a small sample. Let’s make your first sweater together!
Materials:
  • 70 yds medium weight yarn in light or bright color
  • Knitting needles in size appropriate for yarn (between US 6-8 [4.25-5 mm], depending on how tight you knit) plus third needle (any type) in same size
  • ruler, preferably metal
  • pencil or pen for making notes
  • small stitch holders
  • Ring markers, tapestry needle
Homework:
Cast on 24 stitches. Knit 2 rows.
Row 1 (RS) Knit.
Row 2 Purl.

Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until piece measures 4″ [10 cm].  Cut yarn, leaving a 6″ [15 cm] tail; slip stitches to a stitch holder or piece of scrap yarn. Make a second square, same as the first, but leave stitches on needle and yarn attached.

Minimum of 3 students
