Join us this October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month to knit or crochet Knitted Knockers in support of breast cancer survivors! We are teaming up with the Herrick Cancer Center (Sutter Summit Alta Bates Campus) for a Knitted Knockers drive.
What are Knitted Knockers? They are soft, comfortable handmade prosthetics for breast cancer survivors who have undergone mastectomies, lumpectomies, radiation and/or are undergoing reconstruction. They can be knitted or crocheted using approved cotton yarns. Please learn more by visiting the Knitted Knockers website.
How can I help? The Herrick Cancer Center and Celia McCarthy from ImagiKnit will be hosting an in-person stitch session on Thursday October 17 from 4-6pm at 2001 Dwight Way in Berkeley. Celia will be on hand to help provide knit or crochet assistance to those who need it. Yarn and some knitting needles and crochet hooks will be provided thanks to the Herrick Cancer Center, but bringing your own needles is also encouraged if you have them! Because space is limited, please RSVP by selecting from the following options on this page and checking out.
Are Knitted Knockers a beginning friendly project? Knitted Knockers use a variety of knitting techniques that we would consider more intermediate. While Celia will be on hand to help, prior knitting and crochet experience will be needed to be able to complete a knocker.
Can I still participate if I don't live nearby or am not available on the 17th? YES! ImagiKnit San Francisco and ImagiKnit Berkeley are drop off sites for Knitted Knockers. You are welcome to bring any completed and unstuffed knockers to either store and we will ship them to the headquarters for distribution. Be sure to use an APPROVED yarn like Circulo Anne and Cascade Ultra Pima and to follow the patterns available here. If you don't knit or crochet but want to help, you could also help by sponsoring yarn for folks to knit into knockers. Just e-mail us at imagikniteast@gmail.com to inquire.
