Introduction to Fair Isle Class (Berkeley)

Fair Isle is one of the Shetland islands and is well known for its wool and traditional colorwork that is called Fair-isle knitting. Join us and learn this beautiful technique that opens a world of stranded knitting with beautiful and fun patterning. We will begin making a fingerless glove 

We will explore Fair Isle technique including: 

  • several methods for carrying yarn 

  • tension tips

  • how to carry & catch the long floats on the WS of work

  • how to read colorwork charts

Instructor - Faina Goberstein

Faina Goberstein is an independent knitwear designer, author, and a professional teacher. Taking an early retirement from a long career as a math professor gave Faina a chance to let her creativity and long-time passion for knitwear design to become a second profession. She now teaches at live events and virtually for Vogue Knitting Live, Rowan Connect, Interweave Yarn Fest, and various venues such as guilds, fiber fests, and yarn shops locally, around the country and abroad.

The class will take place in person at our Berkeley shop located at 2921 College Avenue.

Experience with knits and purls, and knitting in rounds by any method for small circumferences.


One of the following needle choices for knitting a small circumference : a set of double-pointed needles, or 24-inch circular needle, or two circular needles in US size 7 (or size to obtain approx. 5 sts per inch in stockinette)

Worsted weight yarn in 2 contrasting colors (one dark for the background and one a contrasting light)

Pen and 2 color pencils repeating your yarn colors

Completed homework (see below)

Homework
With your choice of needles, and color A (background) CO 40 sts. Join the round, pm. Work k1, p1 rib for about 1inch. Knit 2 rnds

Supplies are not included in the cost of the class. If you choose to purchase supplies the day of the class, please arrive at the shop 30 minutes prior to the class start time to allow enough time.

If you need to cancel your reservation, please let us know as soon as possible and at least 48 hours ahead of the day and we will issue a store credit for the cost of the class. Day before or day of cancellations will result in a forfeiture of the class cost. No shows cannot be credited or refunded.
