Free Pattern Friday: Crocheting with Chunky Mochi

June 06, 2014

Want an instant gratification project this weekend?  If you know your way around a crochet hook, you could whip up a cozy, self-striping cowl in no time!

Today we are featuring two free patterns that use one of our favorite yarns, Chunky Mochi.  Using a P sized hook, you can select either the short or long version.  The short version (shown on the top left) uses two balls of yarn.  The free pattern can be found here.  The longer version (shown on the bottom right) can be wrapped once around the neck and uses six balls.  The free pattern for the long version can be found here.

Chunky Mochi is so soft and squishy you’ll never want to put it down!  It’s so much fun to watch the colors shift as you work.  Pick a shade you can’t resist and get hooking!

What's on our Needles?

May 28, 2014

Have you ever wanted a glimpse into the stash of a yarn store employee? When you are surrounded by every yarn option imaginable 40 hours a week, it can be difficult to narrow down your knitting queue. Katelyn is guest blogging today about the project she most recently cast on.

The moment we unloaded the Merino Worsted Superwash by Rhichard Devrieze, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. Immediately after finding out one of my best friends was expecting, I snatched up four skeins and cast on for the Big Bad Baby Blanket.

The Big Bad Baby Blanket (from Debbie Stoller’s Stitch ‘n’ Bitch) has got to be one of the most tried and tested baby blanket patterns out there. Despite the fact that it was released almost a decade ago, we are still helping knitters find yarn for it at least once a week.  I can’t think of a better yarn for this project than the Merino Worsted Superwash. Instead of holding two strands of fingering weight yarn doubled, you can use just the one strand of worsted weight yarn and it works out perfectly. Machine washable and soft, it is available in an array of “funfetti” colorways that you’ll go gah gah over. You’ll need only 4 skeins.

I also had the pleasure of trying the Knitter’s Pride Cubics needles. I had forgotten my needles at home but was headed out after work so naturally I figured I’d rather purchase new needles than be caught for 3 hours without my knitting. It seemed like the perfect excuse to try the square needles everyone has been buzzing about. Let me just say… I LOVE LOVE LOVE these needles! They are smooth, seamlessly joined and have perfect tips. I found I could knit on them for hours and hours with minimal discomfort to my hands. If you haven’t tried them yet, I highly recommend them.

The Cubics weren’t the only thing I treated myself to that day…

These new stitch markers are amazing! I didn’t think I was the type of knitter who cared about my stitch markers, but I guess I was wrong. These delightful metal markers make me happy every time I get to them in my work. Handcrafted by Knitifacts, these Ringers are available in several colors and sizes. Drop by the shop and we’ll be happy to show you!

I’m knitting furiously and have just reached the halfway point in my project. I can’t wait to show you the finished product!
