Things We Like: Eucalan
Customers always ask us questions about cleaning handknits. Our answer: Eucalan!
Eucalan is non-toxic, biodegradeable and free of phosphates, synthetic fragrance and dye. The name Eucalan is a combination of the two major ingredients from the original formula (eucalyptus and lanolin). They've since added lavender (which, like eucalyptus, has moth-repelling properties), grapefruit (which has natural disinfectant properties), jasmine (called 'Wrapture') and an unscented version. Eucalan is scented with only essential oils.
Fun fact: the lanolin in Eucalan is a natural conditioner for wool. This helps increase the loft of the fiber and decrease the itchiness of wool by relaxing the wool barbs.
We love the variety of scents and we especially love that it needs no rising! This means less handling of the wool which helps avoid matting/felting.
Here's how we use it:Add a capful of Eucalan to a basin.
Fill with cool water.
Completely submerge item, gently squeeze to incorporate water and soak for 15-20 minutes.
Pull item out of water, roll in a towel and squeeze (we like to step on it) to remove excess water.
Block/lay flat to dry.
If you have a top loading machine, you can add a capful of Eucalan to the machine and fill. Add item and soak (DO NOT AGITATE) for 15-20 minutes. Spin to remove water. Block/lay flat to dry.
We also like to add a couple of drops to our spray bottle that we use for spray blocking. It's not just for handknits! Eucalan is perfect for baby items, lingerie and other delicate items.
Since no rinsing is needed, Eucalan is perfect for travel! Stash a couple of sample packets in your luggage and you've got a simple way to wash handknits and delicates away from home.
